Research

Please see:

In 2004 I undertook a Clinical Trials and Good Clinical Practice in Primary Care Training Day run by EPCRN. I have been external examiner to nine PhD candidates (Simon Barnard, City University, 1999; Catherine Porter, Manchester University, 2005; Ben Wright, Essex University, 2008; Penny D’Ath, City University, 2008; Dharani Ramamurthy, Anglia Ruskin University, 2010; Marc Lambooij, Eindhoven University; Shelley Hopkins, QUT, 2013; Laura Monger, Anglia Ruskin University, 2014; Daniel Tilia, UNSW, 2021) and two professional doctorates (Ian Beasley, Aston University, 2012; Josie Forte, Aston University, 2015). I have supervised:

Clinical practice

I have worked as a practising community optometrist since 1984 and for most of my career, I have spent most of my working week seeing patients in a community optometric practice.

Expert witness

I have been involved in over 70 cases as expert witness since 1999, including complaints brought before the General Optical Council Fitness to Practice Committee, NHS tribunals, civil litigation (clinical negligence), and the first criminal case (alleged manslaughter through clinical negligence) relating to clinical optometry. I have taken instructions from solicitors (for both prosecution and defence), General Optical Council, Association of Optometrists, and from local NHS organisations. These cases have included claims concerning orthoptics (binocular vision, strabismus, and amblyopia), paediatric eye problems, specific learning difficulties, retinal detachment, tumours, contact lenses, domiciliary eyecare, and the provision of NHS services. I was Director of Studies in a three-year programme of research which determined the content of typical eye examinations by community optometrists, which provides a unique insight into the performance that can be expected of reasonably competent optometrists. I have recently supervised a literature review investigating whether modern imaging techniques (e.g., fundus photography) can replace ophthalmoscopy in community optometric practice.

Other activities

In 1993, I gave advice to the College of Optometrists on the therapeutic use of coloured filters which was later incorporated into guidance that the College issued to the profession. I have contributed to subsequent updates to this guidance, and to Other activities with the College of Optometrists include: contributing to continuing education syllabi in dyslexia and binocular vision, co-author of the syllabus and Chair of the Subject Expert Panel for the higher Diploma in Orthoptics, member of the Higher Qualifications Exam Board, and the Working Group on Schoolchildren. For over 10 years I was an examiner for the College of Optometrists Diploma in Orthoptics and latterly was chair of the subject expert panel for this diploma.

I am author of eight editions of books, six on binocular vision anomalies and two on vision and dyslexia. From 2002 to 2013 I was a member of the Editorial Board of the peer-reviewed journal, Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics. I have been involved in several multi-media training products, typically as expert consultant and/or as presenter. I have reviewed many journal articles and several grant applications, including for UK research councils.

Since November 2008, I have been a governor of Brentwood School. This is an independent school with over 1,500 pupils and which employs approximately 200 teachers. I am the governor with special responsibility for safeguarding.
