Contact Lens Types
Cole Martin Tregaskis have experience in fitting a large range of standard and specialist contact lenses.
Can I wear contact lenses?
As we are an independent practice, we are not tied to any manufacturer and have access to literally hundreds of types of lenses.
As a result, we can fit almost anyone with contact lenses. From young children to older adults, complex/high prescriptions, and for reading and distance vision problems (to correct presbyopia).
The benefits of contact lens wear
Contact lenses give more natural vision than glasses without any unwanted magnification. They give better peripheral vision and are safer to use for sport. Specialist contact lenses can also help slow down the progression of shortsightedness in children (myopia). Many people also enjoy wearing contact lenses for cosmetic reasons and so they can wear standard sunglasses on top.
Contact lens types
Soft lenses
Daily disposable
These are worn once and thrown away. They are hygienic and convenient and comfortable from when first worn.
Fortnight or monthly lenses
These are removed every evening and cleaned and are replaced every two to 4 weeks.
Gas-Permeable (hard) lenses
Lenses that are worn during the day and removed every evening. They are replaced when needed, typically once a year. They can take time to adapt to, but give excellent vision and can be useful for patients with dry eye or high astigmatism.
Specialist contact lenses

These include soft daily disposables such as MiSight, MyLo and NaturalVue, and three monthly lenses such as Esencia for more complex prescriptions . Hard lenses (Orthokeratology, or OrthoK lenses) can also be used myopia management and are worn overnight giving great vision during the day without any correction.

Contact lens fittings
A contact lens fitting starts with an eye health check and taking measurements of the shape of the front surface of the eye. We will also discuss why you are interested in contact lenses and when you want to wear them. This enables us to choose the best lens for you. These contact lenses are then inserted into your eyes and we ask you to wear them for about an hour, giving us feedback about your vision and how your eyes are feeling. This fitting is followed by a tuition where we take time to show you how to insert, remove and looking after your new lenses. There will also be follow up appointments booked after a week to check how you are getting on.
